French early small trade knife-Chazeau
Traditional French trade knife. In the early pioneer and explorer days in North America in the 17th and 18th century, both the English and the French supplied sturdy knives to be traded to indigenous peoples and to be used for currency.
Typically these were carbon steel and of simple, utilitarian design that would hold an edge and were easy to sharpen.
They were at home in the camp, hunting or as weapons. The handle on this one is typical French "Hetre" (Beech) and is finished with simple Tung Oil. The sheath or "etui" is made from natural leather with metal fasteners for durability.
These knives are still exported today into the former French colonies of Africa!
